Sarah Kane’s Phaedra’s Love is a reboot of the classic myth of a queen whose unrequited infatuation with her son destroys both their lives and the kingdom. Our interpretation tells the story in a fictional world of technological overload with a focus on excess and civic unrest in a three-quarters stage.
The lighting in Phaedra was designed to be cold, artifical, and inhuman. The instruments themselves supported the idea the technology was alive by audibly moving in the air and creating a constant hum. With the end of the play, warm daylight is seen for the first time to symbolize a cleansing of the stage.
