, by Calderón de la Barca, is considered the first zarzuela. A zarzuela, like its English equivalent musical theater, alternates between song and spoken word. tells the Greek myth of Dafne, a water nymph sworn to honor the virgin goddess Artemis, and Apolo, the god of music, art, and the sun. After Apolo mocks Eros, god of love, Eros exacts revenge by shooting Apolo with a golden arrow and Dafne with a lead arrow. The arrows result in Apolo's infatuation with Dafne and her subsequent disgust with him. After his continuous pursuit of her, Dafne prays to her father, a river god, who transforms her into a tree to escape Apolo.
