THE PILLOWMAN Created by: Shelly Rodriguez and Marina McClure
California Institute of the Arts Martin McDonagh's The Pillowman is the story of a writer and his brother in a totalitarian state being interrogated for the similarities between his gruesome short stories and a string of child murders happening in the town. The Pillowman alternates between scenes of an oppressive prison and the story-worlds of Katurian, the protagonist. The majority of the stories are performed behind strips of scrim fabric that enclose the audience and the stage in a sort of membrane that the characters of the stories weave between. This show was an experiment in light, in that the lighting orchestrated the arc of the show and actors concentrated on using light as means of storytelling..
